Tonne of Carbon Dioxide

(tCO₂)
Definition

A unit of measurement used to quantify the mass of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. One tonne is equivalent to 1,000 kilograms or approximately 2,204.6 pounds. This measurement is commonly used in environmental science, climate policy, and carbon accounting to report and manage greenhouse gas emissions. For example, in carbon trading systems and carbon offset programs, emissions are often reported and traded in terms of tonnes of CO₂, making it a standard unit for assessing and comparing the impact of various emission reduction efforts.
