Technology Innovations and Emissions Reduction
(TIER)
Definition
The program developed by the Alberta government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from large industrial facilities in the province. The TIER program aims to incentivize companies to invest in new technologies and practices that will reduce their emissions, while also providing flexibility for companies to choose how they achieve emissions reductions. Companies that are subject to the TIER program must meet specific emission intensity targets or pay a price on excess emissions.
