Technology Innovation and Emissions Reductions Regulation
(TIER)
Definition
A policy framework implemented by the government of Alberta, Canada, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while encouraging technological innovation in industrial sectors. Under TIER, large industrial emitters are required to meet specific emissions intensity reduction targets, either by improving their operations to lower emissions, purchasing emissions credits from lower-emitting companies, or paying into a technology fund that supports the development of cleaner technologies. The regulation is designed to balance environmental goals with economic growth, incentivizing industries to invest in innovations that reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to Alberta's overall climate change strategy.
