Definition

A reddish-brown gas with a characteristic sharp, biting odor. It is a significant air pollutant produced from the combustion of fossil fuels, especially in vehicles and industrial processes. Nitrogen dioxide contributes to the formation of ground-level ozone and particulate matter, which can have adverse effects on human health and the environment. It is also a precursor to acid rain.
