Mitigation Hierarchy
Definition
The mitigation hierarchy consists of a hierarchy of steps, in the following order of priority: avoidance, GHG emissions reduction, contribution to climate mitigation beyond the value chain, and counterbalancing residual GHG emissions. An organization should prioritize actions to avoid releasing GHG emissions into the atmosphere and reduce GHG emissions when avoidance is not possible.
