Chlorofluorocarbon

(CFC)
Definition

A group of synthetic chemicals used primarily as refrigerants, propellants in aerosol sprays, and solvents. They are known for their stability and non-flammability. However, CFCs are harmful to the environment because they deplete the ozone layer, which protects Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This depletion leads to increased UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface, contributing to skin cancer, cataracts, and other ecological impacts. Due to these environmental concerns, the production and use of CFCs have been largely phased out under international agreements such as the Montreal Protocol.
