Absolute Reduction Approach

(ARA)
Definition

A strategy for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that focuses on achieving a specific, fixed reduction in emissions relative to a baseline year. Unlike intensity-based targets, which reduce emissions per unit of output, the absolute reduction approach mandates a total decrease in emissions, regardless of changes in production or economic growth. This method is often used in corporate sustainability initiatives and climate commitments to ensure that overall emissions decrease in line with global efforts to mitigate climate change.
