Tonne of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent

(tCO₂e)
Definition

A unit of measurement used to express the total impact of various greenhouse gases in terms of the amount of CO₂ that would have the same global warming potential (GWP). This standardizes different gases by converting their emissions into an equivalent amount of CO₂ based on their GWP. For instance, methane and nitrous oxide are potent greenhouse gases with higher GWPs than CO₂, so their emissions are converted into CO₂e to provide a consistent basis for comparison and reporting. The use of tCO₂e facilitates the tracking, management, and reduction of overall greenhouse gas emissions across different sectors and projects.
