Small Island Developing State
(SIDS)
Definition
A group of low-lying coastal countries, primarily located in the Caribbean, Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, that face unique socio-economic and environmental challenges due to their small size, geographic isolation, limited resources, and vulnerability to natural disasters. These states are particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and ocean acidification, which threaten their ecosystems, economies, and communities. SIDS often advocate for stronger global climate action, sustainable development practices, and support from the international community to build resilience and achieve sustainable development goals.
