Methanol
(CH₃OH)
Definition
A colourless, volatile, and flammable liquid alcohol that is used as a fuel, solvent, antifreeze, and in the production of chemicals. It is the simplest form of alcohol and is also known as wood alcohol because it was historically produced from the destructive distillation of wood. Methanol is now typically synthesized from natural gas or biomass. It is used in various industrial processes and as an alternative fuel source, though it is toxic to humans if ingested.
