Methane
(CH₄)
Definition
A colourless, odorless, and highly flammable gas that is the simplest alkane and a major component of natural gas. It is a potent greenhouse gas, with a global warming potential significantly higher than carbon dioxide over a short time frame. Methane is produced both naturally, from sources like wetlands and livestock digestion, and through human activities, such as fossil fuel extraction and agriculture. Managing methane emissions is crucial for climate change mitigation efforts.
