Joint Implementation

(JI)
Definition

Mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol that allows industrialized countries to implement greenhouse gas emission reduction projects in other industrialized or economically advanced countries. By investing in projects that reduce emissions, these countries can earn emission reduction credits, known as Emission Reduction Units (ERUs). These credits can be used to meet their own emission reduction targets or obligations. JI aims to provide cost-effective ways for developed countries to achieve their climate goals while promoting sustainable development in host countries.
