Hydrofluorocarbons
(HFCs)
Definition
Synthetic compounds used mainly as refrigerants, solvents, and in foam-blowing applications. They do not deplete the ozone layer, unlike chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), but they have a high global warming potential (GWP) and contribute significantly to climate change. Due to their strong greenhouse effect, there are international efforts to phase down or replace HFCs with more environmentally friendly alternatives under agreements like the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
