European Union Emissions Trading System

With about 45% of EU greenhouse gas emissions covered by the UE ETS, it's the world's largest cap and trade scheme. Emissions from heavy industry, electricity generation, and aircraft in the EU are covered by this programme, which was implemented in 2005.
